Before Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale premiered in Hulu, the streamer announced that the series has been renewed for a fifth season. The exciting announcement was made on Thursday by Dana Walden, Chairman of Entertainment, Walt Disney Television, on the Disney Investor Day.
The series is produced by MGM Television and internationally distributed by them as well, and stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, O-T Fagbenle, Amanda Brugel, Bradley Whitford, and Sam Jaeger.
The story so far
The story is based on Margaret Atwood’s sci-fi Nobel of the same name, and is set in dystopic Gilead, a totalitarian society that was previously a part of the United States. The fundamentalists that rule Gilead treats women as mere property, and when they face a low birth rate due to various environmental disasters, the few remaining fertile women gets forced into sexual servitude so that they can repopulate. One of these women, named June Osborne or Offred, is determined to fight against this terrifying system and find the daughter that was taken from her.
In the fourth season, we see June becoming a menacing rebel leader and striking back against Gilead, but this in turn invites more unexpected and dangerous obstacles. She gets torn between her quest for justice and revenge, and her valued relationships get broken.
The drama got 54 Primetime Emmy nominations after three seasons, out of which it won 15, including beat original drama, and became the first drama from a streaming service to win an Emmy. Moss also won an Emmy for lead actress in a drama series.
Season 4 will consist of ten episodes and will release in 2021, but the date hasn’t bee revealed yet.
