Deadline has reported on the Sonic franchise’s future. A third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is in development, and so is a spin-off series for Knuckles. And of course, Idris Elba will return to voice the beloved character.

Sega CEO Haruki Satomi released the news in a statement. Satomi added that the video game company is delighted to announced the first live action series, and praised their partnership with Paramount. They are excited to see the expanding universe of Sonic and the other characters. Satomi made sure to remind fans about Sega’s next video game title called Sonic Frontiers. The wise cracking, fast-moving hedgehog has been in the gaming industry for the past 30 years. Sega will continue to bring more memorable moments with these characters.

The first movie came out in February 2020, and broke multiple box office records. It became the domestic top-grossing video game adaptation of all time, and earned almost $320 million in the worldwide box office. Paramount wasted no time in green lighting a sequel, and brought in more beloved characters.

In the trailers, we see that Knuckles has teamed up with Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to beat Sonic (Ben Schwartz). He was manipulated by the evil doctor in the games, and the movie has taken a similar formula. His appearance in the trailer was greatly welcomed by fans, as Knuckles is shown as a no-nonsense, intense character. Elba’s voice is also a great fit for the character.

We are yet to know if the series comes before or after the third movie. Stay tuned.
