Billy Porter gave the LGBTQ State of the Union on Tuesday. He spoke hours before President Donald Trump addressed Congress.
Donald Trump was not the only one speaking to the State of the Union. ‘Pose’ icon Billy Porter also spoke for Logo TV. Porter’s speech has a lot of parts covering Trump’s rule.
Billy Porter began his speech by reminding about that the state of his union is strong. However, the citizens of the state have to be more evident. In 2020, one can see that the states union is far from broken.
The 50-year-old activist called Trump’s presidency phase as one of the biggest crises of his lifetime. He appealed to the citizens that only they can correct and change the course.
He believes that the nation has somewhat survived his presidency rule during the first term. But the nation may not be the condition to survive another term. Donald Trump is a threat to the country (and the world) as well as to democracy.
He brought focus to the banning of transgender people in the military. With Trump’s support, the health care professionals have refused to do medical procedures on LGBTQ patients.
Billy continued his speech and said that each day is a matter of life and death in his rule. FBI has reported that within last year, the violence rate has increased. More than 25 innocent people were killed in 2019. The year by far as to become the worst for the transgender American citizens.
He also spoke about the drawbacks faced by LGBTQ people around the nation and world (Brazil’s discrimination and transphobia). He talked about the ban on gay sex in Kenya. He said every act of love is a step away from hate.
Potter ended up his speech by appealing to the masses to come together and fight for the transgender people against the injustice. There is no other choice than fight for it and win.
