Daniel Craig returns in this bigger and better sequel
Knives Out was an exciting movie, and whodunit movies can usually be hard to pull off convincingly. But not for director Rian Johnson, as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery manages to top it. The director has always been able to bring his twist to modern cinema, with examples like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Brick. The director exceeds already high expectations with Benoit Blanc’s (Daniel Craig) next big mystery.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Review
Knives Out 2 leaves New England and heads to Greece, with a new set of characters. They’re headed to a private island owned by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton). Invitees include a governor running for Senate, a scientist, a streaming star, a fashion designer, and other rich people. Among them, Detective Blanc seems like an oddball.
Being a mystery film, nothing further can be shared, and doing so will be a great disrespect. So treading lightly, we can say that Johnson manages to add further depth to the mystery, taking the audiences on an exhilarating ride in an ever-changing puzzle. The onion in the title is apt, seeing that layer after layer of mystery needs to be peeled back, and when we figure out that things are solved, there’s more. The story is deeply satisfying and far from whatever we expect to see.
To summarise, Knives Out 2 is a more tightly-knit and intimate story, while also being a couple of steps above the original. Craig definitely stands out, while acknowledging and embracing the goofiness of the situation. Another impressive performer will be Janelle Monáe, who finally gets a proper role to show her capabilities.
The one flaw we can find out is that the entire cast does not get their time to shine. Many get lost in the confusion and in the end, don’t contribute to the story. But aside from that, Glass Onion should be on your list.
