Potential for Romance?
The latest blockbuster to kick the doors of theatres by Marvel is Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings. The movie marks Marvel’s 25th theatrical release and part of Phase 4 of Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie has introduced the Asian culture to the universe. Although things in the movie ended up with clear explanations, one thing that left fans wondering. It was unclear in the movie the relationship between Simu Liu and Awkwafina‘s characters Shang-Chi and Katy. The movie never answered the actual relationship status of Shang-Chi and Katy.
Despite the fact, in the movie, Katy’s grandmother was seen asking about their relationship and when the two of them will get married. Fans were too hoping that the couple will have a romantic relationship with them. Shang-Chi said that both Katy and he are just friends.
What do actors have to say?
When asked about their characters’ relationship status and future after the events of the movie, Awkwafina said in an interview that both Katy and Shang-Chi have a very very strong connection of friendship between them. She said their friendship is based on loyalty, has a blind trust, and kind of unsaid understanding. She further added that Shang-Chi is going through a lot and she doesn’t want Katy to be kind of a neurotic girlfriend because that is not the best thing for Shang-Chi. But she did say that if anything were to happen in the future, it would be based on this friendship.
In another interview, actor Simu Liu seemed much more hopeful towards their relationship. Reflecting on the grandma scene in the movie, he said that that nosy grandma is everyone’s grandma!. Further, he said that Shang-Chi and Katy’s have a wonderful relationship and they support each other, love each other in their own way, and have carefree energy that allows them to be truly themselves.
Well, he also added that whether the relationship is romantic or not is not up to him to decide but the possibility is certainly open for that. People would have to wait for that and he hopes to revisit the characters again and to discover what happens.
