Sam Smith, the British singer, asked everyone to refer him with gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them. He said this after citing, “a lifetime of being at war with my gender.” Smith took to Instagram to announce this. The Grammy-winning musician titled the post with the caption, “My pronouns are they/them.”
Smith further added in the caption that, “’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out”. Expressing his excitement and nervousness, he said that he’s privileged to be surrounded by people that support him in the decision.
This announcement comes six months after the singer revealed of being neither a male or a female and floating somewhere in between. He said it was too early to explain “what it means to be non-binary.”
Smith had come out with being non-binary earlier this year in March. He had still agreed upon calling with male pronouns. Smith also admitted that they cannot still speak very clearly on the topic of non-binary at a significant length. He paid tribute to all the activists of the trans community and non-binary community as those leaders helped him give clarity on the topic.
Sam Smith named some leaders such as Jonathan Van Ness, Laverne Cox, Munroe Bergdorf, Laverne Cox Stonewall, and GLAAD and thanked these leaders. Smith mentioned that he loves them all. Although feeling scared, the singer admitted that he now feels super free. Smith concluded his message by advising fans to be kind.
However, Sam Smith isn’t the first celebrity to recognize themselves as a non-binary. Indya Moore and Nico Tortorella have also urged to call them as they/them.
While talking to The Sunday Times, Smith had said that they had been struggling with which pronouns to be used since 2017. Sam said that according to them, gender is a fluid concept.
