Prince Harry and Meghan Markle receive the President’s Award
The 53rd NAACP Image Awards were held tonight and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had quite the spotlight on them. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle received the President’s Award at the ceremony.
This award is for recognizing special achievement and prominent public service. Among the renowned winners of this prestigious award in the past, luminaries like Jesse Jackson and Muhammad Ali shine bright on the list.
Meghan Markle talks about past civil rights leaders in her speech
During her acceptance speech, Markle highlighted some major work done by past civil rights leaders. She further said that it is essential for the voter protection laws to pass. Because this passage will also be a way to honour the legacies if the leaders.
The Duchess said that re-establishing federal voting protections in our country will fulfil the work done by renowned civil rights leaders like late John Lewis. She also expressed the honour she felt for being present among so many distinguished awardees.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry also took a few minutes to quickly offer their support for the Ukrainians during the ongoing war with Russia. He acknowledged the people of Ukraine and mentioned that they need urgent support from everyone from the perspective of a global community.
The Duke and the Duchess partnered up with the NAACP
Meghan and Harry partnered up with the NAACP via their non-profit to establish a new award. The title of this new award is the NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award. This new award will recognize leaders making transformational changes with respect to both technology and social justice.
Dr. Safiya Noble, who is the co-founder of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry, received the award this year.
The Prince mentioned that Noble’s work marks a new chapter in the field of civil rights. He added that the community is aware of how essential it is to speak up for what’s right. He mentioned that it’s time to take this to the global level.
Markle added in conclusion that in this era of digital justice movement, she and Prince Harry are excited to partner up with NAACP. She urged everyone to remember the efforts of the past vital leaders. Furthermore, she asked everyone to utilize those efforts to deal with the existing modern challenges.
