The series arrives from Hannah Hafey, Kaitlin Smith and BOOM! Studios
HBO Max has put into development Misfit City, a graphic novel adaptation of the same name from BOOM! Studios. The series was created by Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Kurt Lustgarten, and illustrated by Naomi Franquiz.
The series will be adapted by Popular writers Hannah Hafey and Kaitlyn Smith. Both Hafey and Smith will also serve as creators and executive producers as well. Kiwi Smith and Kurt Lustgarten will also serve as executive producers.
The central character will be Wilder, a teenage girl who is sick of her tiny and backwater hometown, Cannon Cove. However, Wilder and her friends come across a centuries-old pirate map, and starts to think if maybe she was wrong about her town after all. The series can be compared to Stranger Things and The Goonies, as many mysterious and creepy characters are included.
BOOM! Studios has been on the news recently after partnering with Keanu Reeves for his original comic, BRZRKR. BRZRKR will also get a live-action series and anime adaptation for Netflix. And of course, Reeves will play the lead role.
Other famous works from BOOM! Studios include Lumberjanes, Something is Killing the Children, Once & Future, and Mouse Guard. Goosebumps author R.L. Stine has also teamed up with them to make Just Beyond, which will also premiere its first season on Disney+. Something is Killing the Children is in development with Midnight Mass’ Trevor Macy and Mike Flanagan, and an animated adaptation of Mech Cadets is set to debut on the service in 2023.

Hafey and Smith wrote 2018’s Popular for HBO Max. These days, they are busy with the adaptation of St. Mary’s Catholic School Presents The Vagina Monologues for Amazon Studios.
Kiwi Smith had worked in Hollywood projects like Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s the Man, The House Bunny and the Emmy-winning series Trinkets on Netflix.
