Michelle Williams delivers a powerful speech at Golden Globes
It was the night of Golden Globes, the celebration of sublime work from films and television that graced the screens last year. It was a commemoration of talent and many actors swept the elegant Golden Globe trophy for their brilliant portrayal.
Michelle Williams won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a limited series or motion picture for her portrayal of late Gwen Verdon in biographical miniseries Fosse/Verdon. In her speech, while fetching the award, the 39-year-old American actor used her platform and stature for all the right reasons by delivering a thought-provoking speech about women’s rights and reproductive freedom.
Thanking everyone for the award, the actress described the Golden Globe trophy as the acknowledgement of all the choices that she made in her professional space. In a brilliant monologue, the actress said that she is grateful to live in a society where choice exists even for women because there are things that happen to a woman’s body that are not the choices that women or girls make.

Talking about her journey to the audience Los Angeles, California, the pregnant actress continued that she’s tried her very best to live a life of her own making. It’s not just a series of events that happened to her but one that she could stand back and look at and recognize her handwriting all over—the one that she carved with her own hand, but it wouldn’t have been possible for her without exercising a woman’s right to choose. To choose when to have her children and with whom, when she felt supported and to be able to balance their lives knowing, as all mothers know, that the scales must and will tip towards their children, she proceeded to move the audience at night with every word of hers.
She added that she knows her choices might look different than others but thanks to god or whomever one prays to, that they live in a country founded on the principle that people are free to live by their own faith, her words brought tears in her best friend Busy Philips’ eyes who wiped her tears as she was listening to her friend with rapt attention. Philips had suffered an abortion when she was just 15.

Directly talking to the women of 18 and above, Michelle urged women to come out and vote. She urged women to do so in their own self-interest as that’s what men have been doing for years, which is the reason that the world looks so much like them. Concluding the speech on a high note, she asked women not to forget that women constitute the largest voting body in the USA. “Let’s make it look more like you,” she finished.

This isn’t the first time that Michelle has used the prestigious award functions stage for something more meaningful. The actress has delivered an equally inspiring speech on pay discrepancy in September 2019 during Emmy Awards where she was awarded for her work in Fosse/Verdon.
