Laura Dern was recognized as a gay icon during the Independent Spirit Awards 2020. Laura Dern was raking in the awards for her role as Nora Fanshaw in Marriage Story but we would like to argue the ultimate honour she has received this year is a song performed by the Gay Men’s Choir of Los Angeles at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday night.
This show was one of the best representations of the LGBTQ community and it also encouraged more queer-actors in Hollywood.
During the show’s activities, Aubrey Plaza, the host introduced the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles by referring to the requirement for more representation of LGBTQ community in films and justly mentioning some very popular gay films nominated at this year’s show.
Accordingly, Plaza also observed the show’s intent to “shine on a spotlight on some of the gayest moments in other films that you may not have realized were gay.” Then it was the time when the Gay Men’s Chorus overtook the platform as a clip reel played, showing bits like FKA Twigs talking about snakes in Honey Boy, Jennifer Lopez‘s pole dance to Fiona Apple in Hustlers and Octavia Spencer playing a history teacher in Luce to be considered as some of the gayest moments in otherwise non-gay movies.
While the audience was still applauding and laughing with each reel, the Gay Men’s Chorus then went on a merry run bringing every one of Dern’s Marriage Story moments under the radar, which included her lawyer character kicking off her heels in her office and taking off her blazer while in court. As the chorus turned into something out of this world and ecstatic, Dern started to dance in her seat, enjoying at this illustrious salute. All of these were moments worth capturing!
