Netflix just scored the most Oscar nominations by any studio with movies in contention this year. But did you think it’s the end? Well, no they’re not finished yet. Sergio was going to arrive on the streaming platform and even in some of the theaters on April 17. And EW has exclusively released the first trailer. However, the film seems to get postponed due to the lockdown.
Narcos star Wagner Moura is playing the diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello. The film is a biopic of director Greg Barker. It is supposed themselves have its world premiere at Sundance later this month. The film is set in 2003, during the time when charismatic, accomplished Vieira de Mello, who is recently appointed as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was given a special assignment in Iraq to solve the escalating global tensions.
Moura said that it has been his goal to produce movies on Latinos that don’t reinforce stereotypes. He is really proud that as a Brazilian he can bring attention to the life of one of the person whom he considers to be a hero and compatriots, Sergio Vieira de Mello. The producer also served as the film’s director. In a statement to EW he said that, the film is more about empathy. It is one of the most powerful quality of Sergio. And he is so much inspired with this.
The film will arrive as one of the sections of Sundance’s lined up stack. It features a handful of Netflix titles such as Dee Rees’ The Last Thing He Wanted, Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana and Amy Ryan starter Lost Girls.
Sergio had its world debut at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 28. And it was supposed to hit the theaters on Netflix April 17.
