Gareth Edwards to Direct ‘Dune 4’? – Jordan Ruimy

Denis Villeneuve hasn’t even shot “Dune Messiah” yet, but Warner Bros and Legendary are already planning ahead in milking this franchise to death. There’s no question that a ‘Dune 4’ is probably in the works, but who will be directing it is still up in the air.

It will certainly not be Denis Villeneuve who has already stated that he’s done with the franchise after “Dune: Messiah.” Scooper Daniel Richtman is now reporting that Gareth Edwards has been approached by Warner Bros to helm ‘Dune 4,’ but as with all such rumors, it’s very hard to confirm its veracity.

Regardless, it’s food for thought as we await an official announcement, probably sometime next year. Quite honestly, Edwards wouldn’t be a bad fit, his sci-fi filmmaking background could blend very well with the Dune-verse.

His next film, “Jurassic World Rebirth,” will be released this summer, and as far as we know, he doesn’t have any other project lined up. Edwards’ breakout indie, “Monsters,” proved his worth and his studio debut, “Godzilla”, was well met by critics and audiences.

He also directed what’s so far been the best Disney Star Wars movie, 2015’s “Rogue One,” and 2023’s sleeper sci-fi hit, “The Creator.” Villeneuve has made it clear that Frank Herbert’s books dip in quality after ‘Messiah.’ Frankly, it’s a wise decision on his part to steer away, and its still a major question mark whether Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya would want to make a fourth film without him.

Then again, a big fat paycheck might change their minds. Herbert’s series does go beyond ‘Messiah,’ but the books are much weirder, sillier, and might not lend themselves as well to big screen adapting. There’s “Children Of Dune” and “God Emperor Of Dune,” with the former most likely being referred to as ‘Dune 4.’

With all that said, it’s still too early to really know what the game plan is as far as ‘Dune’ movies go beyond ‘Messiah,’ but Warner Bros ending it all with ‘Messiah’ is very unlikely. We live in the franchise era and Warners milking ‘Dune’ for all its worth is no doubt on the horizon.

Possible Contenders for the Dune Franchise

While Gareth Edwards is an interesting choice, there are other directors who could potentially helm the next installment in the Dune franchise. Some possibilities include:

    • James Cameron – Known for his epic sci-fi films, Cameron could bring a sense of grandeur to the Dune franchise.
      • Dennis Villeneuve – Although Villeneuve has stated that he’s done with the franchise, he could potentially return for the next installment.
        • Neill Blomkamp – The director of District 9 and Elysium, Blomkamp has shown his ability to handle complex sci-fi stories.

Ultimately, the decision of who will direct the next Dune film will depend on a variety of factors, including the vision of the studio and the availability of the cast and crew.

Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2” Update

Yesterday, I sent out a few emails regarding Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2.” I was wondering what was going on with the film since we haven’t heard anything about it. There’s still no release date.

It turns out that Eastwood’s film is not a priority for Warner Bros, at least in terms of awards. If anything, they greenlit it as a thank you to Eastwood for the decades of classic works he’s given to the studio.

I’m also hearing that Eastwood won’t be doing much press, if any, for the film. Stars Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette will be doing the brunt of the work in that regard. Eastwood is 94, and that’s completely understandable.

New Scoop: Clint Eastwood’s Next Project

A source tells me “Clint’s a workaholic and he’s already looking at scripts for a possible next movie. He had a great time making this one and wants to continue on” Eastwood’s filmography has been nothing but consistent these last six decades.

Some of his very best include “Unforgiven,” “Mystic River,” “Gran Torino,” “Changeling,” “The Outlaw Josey Wales,” “Pale Rider,” “High Plains Drifter,” “A Perfect World” and “Million Dollar Baby.” His last film was one of the worst offerings of his career, 2021’s “Cry Macho,” but his twilight years have still been, creatively speaking, very fruitful.

I’m particularly keen on 2018’s “The Mule,” and 2019’s “Richard Jewell” — both very good. “Juror No. 2” stars Toni Collette, Nicholas Hoult, Kiefer Sutherland, J.K. Simmons, Zoey Deutch and Chris Messina. The film is “set during a murder trial where one of the jurors slowly realizes he might have killed the victim in a reckless-driving accident and tries to save the defendant without incriminating himself.”

Duke Johnson’s “The Actor” Update

Last we checked, in November, Duke Johnson was still in post-production on “The Actor” which stars Andre Holland and is being distributed by Neon. This might finally be the year that sees the release of the film as it was recently stamped with an “R” rating by the MPA.

It’s worth noting that “The Actor” has been in production for quite some time now, and the delay in its release is likely due to the complexities of the film’s plot and the need for further refinement.

Johnson has stated that he’s committed to making a film that is true to the spirit of the original material, and it seems that he’s taking his time to get it just right. With the film now sporting an “R” rating, it’s likely to be a more intense and mature take on the subject matter.

We can expect to hear more about “The Actor” in the coming months, and it will be interesting to see how the film is received by audiences and critics alike.
