Daisy Ridley aka Rey from Star Wars says Mark Hamill felt like the real Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Luke’s role in the sequel trilogy was one of the most disputed elements in the new films. The original trilogy portrays Luke as The optimistic and idealistic hero. However we see a striking contrast in the character as he turns into a jaded cynic. He goes into self-imposed isolation and believes the galaxy would be a better place without him.
While some fans felt this characterization was creative and bold, some others said it ruined the character and the franchise. Hamill himself had reservations about the way Luke was portrayed in The Last Jedi. Although he later repented making those remarks in public.
The making-of the Rise of Skywalker documentary includes a segment about Hamill’s return. In it, Daisy Ridley who plays the lead role of Rey in the star wars sequel trilogy discusses how Luke is more like the original trilogy protagonist in The Rise of Skywalker.
She said, “It was probably nice for Mark to be more like the Luke of old. She also added that the director, JJ Abrams really wanted that.
The documentary segment also has a soundbite from Hamill. In which, he talks about Star Wars’ theme of redemption and how it’s important to know that even a Jedi can make mistakes and bounce back from them. Hamil finally seems to be at peace with Luke’s trajectory.
It would have felt out of place if Luke was still pessimistic in The Rise of Skywalker. With the new trajectory of his portrayal in the trilogy, it fits as a perfect continuation from where he left off in The Last Jedi, having learned his lesson.
