“CODA” Makes History at the SAG Awards, Celebrates Deaf Representation

The Screen Actors Guild Awards 2022 took place on February 27. And the awards proved to be a major win for representation of deaf individuals in Hollywood. As CODA, a film about that gives deaf people a chance at their dreams won two SAG awards. The apple TV plus comedy- drama film garnered two nominations and won them both.

The film follows a family in which only the daughter, Ruby Rossi can hear. Her parents Frank and Jackie and older brother Leo are deaf. Ruby helps the family with their fishing business. Following some events at her school, Ruby discovers her love for music. Now must choose between her struggling family business and her passion.

Two Awards at the SAG

This Sian Heder directed project won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the prestigious event. Actor Troy Kotsur, who plays Frank Ross took home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Hence making Kotsur the first ever deaf man to win the SAG award. All the deaf characters in the movie were played by deaf actors which made the movie as empowering as it is. Additionaly, he also won an Oscar nomination.

4 Awards at Sundance

Director Sian Heder is also responsible for the screenplay. Fabrice Gianfermi, Philippe Rousselet, Jerôme Seydoux, and Patrick Wachsberger produced the movie.

Actor Will Smith also won the award for his film “King Richard”. Afterwards Jessica Chastain won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”. So, the night was clearly worth it for the all the actors

CODA, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, 2021 and received 4 awards. It was named one of the top 10 films by American Film Institute as well.
