“Avatar: The Way of Water” broke box office records, grossing up to $55 million already

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is swimming globally

Before The Hobbit, which earned $37.1 million back on December 14, 2012, Avatar: The Way Of Water had earned $55 million Friday in 4,202 theatres, including its $17 million Thursday previews. Although some estimates predict $120 million for the weekend, they are unable to account for pre-sales or the behavior of those early ticket revenues.

If Avatar 2’s $150 million forecast isn’t met, it’s likely because moviegoers are holding out for the top-rrated tickets, which might not become available until after this weekend. It’s difficult to find IMAX, Dolby, or PLF seats for this weekend in places like New York and Los Angeles. While IMAX, Dolby, and the flagship PLF have plenty of 3D showtime for Avatar 2, the US market is underdeveloped, particularly in terms of interest. According to the most recent MPAA figures, only 35% of the region’s 43,6K screens have digital 3D.
