Early ‘Werewolf by Night’ Reactions Are Positive; Call It “A Breath Of Fresh Air” To The MCU!

A true tribute to classic monster movies

The first trailer for Werewolf by Night was shown as a surprise to fans at the D23 expo. It was dubbed as a horror comedy special arriving at Disney+ during the Halloween season. It had the campiness of the horror movies of yesteryear and is believed to be fully black-and-white. The special was directed by renowned musical composer Michael Giacchino, who had composed for Rogue One, The Incredibles, The Batman, and the MCU Spider-Man trilogy.

About Werewolf by Night

Werewolf by Night
Marvel

The titular Werewolf by Night is played by Gael Garcia Bernal, and he will be portraying the Jack Russell version. He stars alongside Laura Donnelly, who plays Elsa Bloodstone aka Vampire by Night. Additional stars include Eugenie Bondurant, Harriet Sansom Harris, special effects legend Kirk Thatcher, Al Hamacher, and Leonardo Nam. The original teleplay was written by Peter Cameron and Heather Quinn.

Not a lot is known apart from the fact that Russell gathers with a group of monster hunters, who are all suspected of being an imposter. He must keep his fangs in check, but outside sources prevent that from happening and he is soon revealed. We are a couple of weeks away, but the delightfully horrific trailer promises a classic monster hunting story with a Marvel twist.

Werewolf by Night Reviews

Man Thing
Marvel

So what are critics saying? One of the first reviews is from Collider’s Steven Weintraub, who praised Giacchino’s direction and was surprised by how much he got away with. This could mean that the special will feature scenes you won’t normally see in a Marvel project. Others praised the tribute to classic monster movies and is easily the best thing the Marvel Disney+ shows have done. Aside from the werewolf, Man-Thing is a standout character.

Make sure you join the hype as Werewolf by Night arrives on Disney+ on October 7.
