Batali was charged for assault and battery in 2019, and he pleaded not guilty for it. This comes from a 2017 case where he forcibly kissed and groped a woman after taking a selfie with her at a restaurant in Boston. The woman alleged that he saw her photographing him, and invited her to take one together. However, he touched and kissed her without consent multiple times after that.

If he is proven guilty, Batali will be a registered sex offender and will face up to 2 1/2 years in prison. Once the jury selection is complete, the case will take place for about two days. Batali is expected to be present throughout, says Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office. Batali’s lawyers refused to comment on Monday, and only said that the charge is without merit.

Additionally, the accuser filed a civil lawsuit against him, seeking damages for “severe emotional distress.” It’s still pending, and her lawyer did not respond to any emails from news outlets.

The 61-year-old’s career took a major nosedive once the allegations sprung up. Mario used to be part of shows like “Molto Mario” and “Iron Chef America.” Aside from the current case, four other women had accused him of inappropriate touching in 2017.

Now Mario himself has apologized for his behaviour, saying the allegations “match up” to how he has acted in an email, he said he had made many mistakes and would like to apologize to everyone he has disappointed. He also said he will take full responsibility.
