The actor spoke about his struggles with addiction on the latest episode of his podcast
Actor Dax Shepard came clean about his ongoing battle with substance abuse in the latest episode of his podcast Armchair Expert.
The episode aired this Friday and is called “Day 7”, and Shepard revealed that he started using opioids again after being sober for 16 years. The actor had struggled with addiction to pain medication, alcohol and cocaine in the past.
The actor also spoke about his fear on coming clean, while discussing the issue with co-host Monica Padman, saying, “One of my fears is, people will maybe bombard me with things I did wrong or judgements of what I should or shouldn’t have done. And maybe some people will feel a sense of betrayal, because we preach honesty and I was being dishonest.”
Getting a positive reaction
He said that he is in a situation where he is taking eight oxycodone hydrochloride pills every day, which is a serious amount and is going to have a bad withdrawal. After getting scared about this and feeling lonely, he came clean to his wife, actress Kristen Bell, and Padman, who showed her support by praising him for sharing it.
Shepard said that after admitting it to his family and his Alcoholics Anonymous support group, the outcome wasn’t anything he feared it would be.
“There was so much understanding and kindness and unconditional love. It’s the only experience I can remember having that was just grace – the definition of grace – and it was very emotional it was a really, really surreal experience. And when it was over, I actually, mentally – for the first time in a very long time – felt optimistic.”
Let’s hope the actor finds the strength to get through this relapse.
