Stay tuned to find out more!A Star-Studded Cast, A Lackluster Film
It’s a struggle to watch actors I know are good starring in a film that clearly isn’t. Such is the case with Robert Zemeckis’ Here. It’s an hour and 45 minutes of Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany and more acting in a way that can’t be taken seriously and almost feels pretend.
Why ‘Here’ Fails to Impress
The de-aging technology used in the film is jarring and noticeable, especially when we have to hear Hanks’ 68-year-old voice come out of what’s supposed to be an 18-year-old’s mouth. The film is poorly lit, and it’s a film so soulless that I questioned the point of it.
Here Director Robert Zemeckis’ poor execution is a major reason behind the film’s poor reception. The storyline is convoluted, and the film moves quickly from one scene to the next and from one period to another without much thought to fluidity and cohesiveness.
The Cast’s Potential Wasted
The talented cast, including Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, is unable to elevate the film’s subpar storytelling. The characters are paper-thin, and the dialogue is flat and poorly delivered.
Most of the characters, especially the characters of color, have barely-there stories, and there are even a few scenes featuring Benjamin Franklin’s illegitimate son, William, which are farcical at best and cringeworthy at worst. There’s a forced sense of emotion throughout the film.
A Missed Opportunity
The film’s unique premise and historical scope are not fully utilized, resulting in a lackluster viewing experience. The film wants us to feel something while watching these paper-thin characters go about their lives in a house that means nothing to us without doing the work to get us there.
I felt absolutely nothing other than boredom and an emptiness the film itself couldn’t shake. There are also too many characters and we’re overwhelmed with following each of them through to the end.
Netflix Adds Another Big Name to Its Roster
Here Will Stream on Netflix US in January 2025 As we stated when the film first launched, we expected a release in early 2025. We predicted that because most Sony movies come to Netflix roughly 120 days after their initial theatrical release, that would’ve meant the film would drop on March 1st, 2025, but caveated that could come much sooner (like Harold and The Purple Crayon just did) or later.
Here’s Netflix Streaming Date
This is the second major Sony theatrical movie to come to Netflix in 2025 with Saturday Night also joining Netflix in January 2025. We’ve got a complete look at the new Sony movies to look forward on Netflix through 2025 and into 2026 here.
Here will be available on Netflix in the United States on January 30th, 2025, for 18 months before leaving for Hulu or Disney+ (or both).
The Implications of a Shorter Release Window
Netflix’s accelerated release schedule may impact the film’s box office performance and its chances of winning awards. The shorter release window may also affect the film’s availability on other platforms.
The streaming giant’s decision to release ‘Here’ on Netflix may influence its content acquisition strategy in the future. It may also impact the way it negotiates with studios and distributors.
The Uncertain Future of ‘Here’ Internationally
Unlike most Sony Pictures movies we cover, this one may not actually stream on Netflix. That’s because they only acquired domestic distribution rights, meaning that Miramax (who financed the film) sold its underlying rights to other distributors internationally.
Why ‘Here’ May Not Come to Netflix Internationally
So far, we know that Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the movie in select countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and some other European territories, so expect the movie to land on Prime Video at some point.
Most other deals are with local distributors, meaning predicting a release date for Netflix is pretty difficult, but we predict that you won’t see it anytime soon.
Amazon MGM Studios Takes Over
Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to ‘Here’ in select countries, and it’s unclear how this will affect the film’s international release. The deal may impact the film’s availability on various platforms.
