UPDATED with further postponement: The Writers Guild said Monday that it is extended the delay of the announcement of its 2025 WGA Awards nominees “until further notice” due to the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires. A new date for the noms have not been set. The move comes after the WGA already pushed its noms last week amid the deadly wildfires that have hit the Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Altadena; the new date was to be today. It now joins other groups that have decided to hold off on nominations during this awards-season corridor, with so many in the industry impacted by the fires and their aftermath. More dangerous winds that fuel such fires are expected in the region over the next two days.

The WGA Awards ceremony is still set to take place February 15 in simultaneous ceremonies at the Edison Ballroom in New York City and the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Other guilds including the Producers Guild have also put a hold on noms announcements, while earlier today the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to delay its Oscar nominations a second time and tweak their 2025 timeline. The new date for those nominations is January 23.

Conclusion

As the Los Angeles wildfires continue to rage on, the WGA Awards has once again postponed the announcement of its nominations. This latest delay is a testament to the devastating impact of the natural disaster on the entertainment industry, and the ongoing struggles to cope with the aftermath. The WGA Awards, a prestigious recognition of outstanding writing in film, television, and digital media, has been a stalwart of the industry for decades. However, this year’s postponement serves as a harsh reminder of the fragility of the industry and its dependence on the physical and emotional well-being of its creators.

The postponement of the nominations announcement has significant implications for the writing community, particularly those who have already submitted their work and are eagerly awaiting the results. It also highlights the need for greater support and resources for writers and industry professionals affected by the wildfires. As the industry navigates this challenging time, it is essential that we prioritize the well-being and safety of our creators, recognizing that their work is not only a source of entertainment but also a reflection of their experiences, perspectives, and talents. As we move forward, it is crucial that we learn from this experience and work towards creating a more resilient and equitable industry for all.

As the WGA Awards nominations announcement is finally made, we are reminded that even in the darkest of times, the power of storytelling and the creativity of our writers shine through. As we stand together in solidarity with those affected by the wildfires, we are reminded that the true strength of our industry lies not in its awards or accolades, but in the resilience and determination of its creators.
