“The Biggest of the ‘Big Three’!”: Celebrating the 76th year of the Venice Film Festival with a throwback!

Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world. La Biennale di Venezia or the Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia begun in August 1932 and is one of the “Big Three” film festivals along with Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival. The International Exhibition of Cinematographic Art of the Venice Biennale is currently in its 76th year and being held from August 28 to September 7, 2019. There have been countless cinematic moments at the Venice Film Festival, with stars like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. The movies premiered here are on their road to being Oscars shortlist. This year’s contenders include Timothee Chalamet’s The King and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.
Other than the movies, the festival is the scene for stars to wear their best and walk the red carpet and relive the long tradition of the festival. This year stars like Brad Pitt, Liv Tyler, Scarlett Johansson, and Laura Dern have already walked down the scarlet pathway for the premiers of Ad Astra and Marriage Story.

Kristen Stewart walked down the red carpet this year along with her Seberg co-stars Jack O’Connell, Anthony Mackie, and Margaret Qualley.

Amongst the old stars, one of the many and famous stars was Elizabeth Taylor who had attended the film festival multiple times. There are many photographs of her on the red carpet adorned in her extravagant jewelry and fashionable dresses. In 1967 she participated in the celebration with Italian actress Claudia Cardinale for a charity ball. One of the most iconic pictures is of Richard Burton with Elizabeth Taylor.

Other famous celebrities include Ginger Rogers with Jacques Bergerac, Monica Vitti, Diana Ross, Paul Newman, Sophia Loren, Salvador Dali, Sean Connery, Jane Fonda with Roger Vadim, Kirk Doughlas with Mehtab, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Helena Bonham Carter and Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer and many more. Sophia Loren is still a regular at the festival.
