The Pogues have returned to action, according to Netflix, and production on season three has begun. In a gorgeous photo shared on Instagram in February 2022, our favorite cast members were included, including Madelyn Cline, Chase Stokes, Madison Bailey, Rudy Pankow, Jonathan Daviss (Monk), Carlacia Grant (The Royal Family), and more.
We are thrilled to announce the return of Outer Banks season three! The cast, crew, and writers have already begun production and we can’t wait for September 2022 when the show will finally return. We’re excited to see all the twists and turns that our favorite characters will face next – here’s hoping for romance, drama, and lots of action.
There was a one-year gap between the first two seasons, with the first premiering in April 2020 and the second barely coming out at the end of July 2021. We also know that season two began filming in August 2020 and ended in April 2021, so let’s take eight months into account for production time. We shouldn’t expect to see Outer Banks season three until September 2022 at the earliest, but it’s more likely that we’ll see it in early 2022.
In the meantime, rewatch seasons one and two on Netflix to prepare for Outer Banks season three!
It’s possible that the show will return, whether or not its planned narrative is told. Jonas Pate, the series’ creator, previously stated that he expects Outer Banks to continue for at least two more seasons.
Outer Banks season 2 premiered on Netflix on July 31, 2021, and has since become a popular streaming title. A third installment has not been approved as of today (August 12), although it appears that it will be renewed. Netflix is expected to place a formal order for Outer Banks season 3 in late August or early September 2021.
All of the key characters and villains are expected to return in Outer Banks season 3. While Pope and Cleo are preparing something, John B keeps close to his wife Sarah. In addition, showrunner Josh Pate hinted at a romance between Kiara nicknamed Kie (Madison Bailey), and JJ (Rudy Pankow) recently:
“We were instantly receptive to [Kiara and JJ getting together] because it seemed like a fun notion to explore, but we kind of put it off until season 3.”
“All along, we’ve regarded it as a four- or five-season show,” Pate said. “We’ve kind of stretched it out pretty far. I’m just hoping that we get the opportunity to tell those stories.”
Chase Stokes also offered his impressions on continuing to portray John B, and it’s excellent news for OBX fans.
“I’d love to continue it, but it ultimately comes down to the response. We’re hoping that people connect with the narrative and continue to fall in love with both the Pogues’ and the entire Outer Banks’ journey, as we did last year,” Stokes told Cosmopolitan UK.
Outer Banks season 3 cast: Who will return?
Following their split from onscreen (and now formally offscreen) partner Chase Stokes, reports circulated that Madelyn Cline’s departure was a possibility.
The pair dated for a year and went public with their relationship in June 2020. Their breakup sparked fears that Cline wouldn’t return for a third season, but she shut the rumors down on Instagram Live by stating, “I’m not going anywhere.”
The 24-year-old captioned her selfie with the following:
“Hi so I’m getting asked if s3 is my final season of obx. I will come back for as many seasons as they will have me. I love my job and there’s not a day that goes by that I’m not grateful for it, and for everyone who has watched it. Not everything on the internet is true.”
Phew, as far as her character Sarah is concerned, things don’t appear to be wrapping up any time soon. According to an interview with ELLE, the actress added: “I want her to be happy. I want her to discover who she is.” That would be the greatest outcome for me as a writer.”
“I’d want to see Jana have to work out what happened with them,” she explained. “I’d love to see her personal relationships with her chosen family develop. Maybe we could learn some backstory about their relationship, or maybe watch as she attempts to enroll at Pogue High School.”
“Season 2 was a lot of fun and quite fast-paced. And, if we’re fortunate enough to get another season, I’d like to delve further into [Sarah] and learn more about her.”
All of the primary characters were shown in Netflix’s confirmation post, as previously announced. Chase Stokes (John B), Madison Bailey (Kiara) and Rudy Pankow (JJ) are all expected to join Cline for the upcoming season. Pogues for life.
Rafe will be played once again by Drew Starkey, while Carlacia Grant, who first appeared on the show as Cleo in season three, has been promoted to series regular status.
Cullen Moss (Sheriff Shoupe) and Charles Esten (Ward) are also slated to join them again.
There’s always the possibility that some fresh faces may join the ranks.
To what extent will Season 2’s conclusion impact Season 3?
Season two of Outer Banks ended on an unexpected note.
Sarah and John B have been searching for the treasure with the rest of the Pogues since the beginning of the series. The gang evaded Ward, Rafe, and rookie Carla (the possibility of murder is never far away from this group)!
Season 2 of Outer Banks centres on the romance between John B (Chase Stokes) and Sarah Cameron, two teens (Madelyn Cline). The teenage lovers flee to the Bahamas after being accused of the murder of a North Carolina sheriff in the first episodes. Later in America, John B and Sarah reunite with their fellow “Pogues” and assist Pope (Jonathan Daviss) in investigating a family heirloom that is being sought by Carla Limbrey, a wheelchair-bound woman (Elizabeth Mitchell). The characters of Outer Banks season 2 battle Ward Cameron (Charles Esten), only to be stranded in “Poguelandia” with their helpful Nassau buddy, Cleo (Carlacia Grant). Here’s what to expect from Outer Banks season 3 and how “The Coastal Venture’s” finale reveal might effect future episodes.
Sarah’s family, the Camerons, had stolen the Pogues’ recently acquired gold cross during a spectacular cargo ship encounter. The group abandoned ship (literally) after narrowly avoiding death (again) and ended up on a barren island.
Many people had believed John B’s father was dead by the time the season came to an end, but it turned out that he wasn’t! He promised to assist find the Shroud of Turin (the miraculous healing fabric that was supposed to have been concealed in the gold cross) if she helped John B and his buddies in return.
If we get a third season, we’d anticipate this pursuit to continue, with viewers wondering if John B will ever see his clearly-breathing father again.
‘John B’s connection with his father is a significant subject,’ Pate told Entertainment Weekly. With his dad back around, John B has to reconcile his idealised vision of his deceased father with the reality of his alive father,” he writes in the novel.
“It’s going to be essential and maybe the spine [of season three], really,” said writer Shannon Burke.
In terms of the Outer Banks season 3 antagonists, look for Esten to reprise his role as the manipulative and now badly injured Ward Cameron, as well as Mitchell as Ms. Limbrey. So, what are the questions that need to be addressed in future episodes? Carla is approached by John B’s reportedly deceased father, who urges Carla to assist him in exchange for a particular shroud (which can apparently heal her). As the story progresses, Stokes’ protagonist will inevitably learn the truth about his father, which should enhance his bond with Sarah. Both teenagers are the children of men who seem to choose pride over family – a strong narrative basis for Season 3 of Outer Banks. Sarah’s actor Cline recently told Entertainment Tonight that she wants to develop her character’s relationship with John B:
“[I]t’d be really exciting to see them start to truly get to know each other in a very true sense in season 3, if we get one.” They’re married, but they don’t know anything about each other. That sounds like a lot of fun to me. They’ve definitely shared a lot of experiences.”
After all, if showrunner Josh Pate has his way, the audience may get their wish after all. As EW reported, “John B’s connection with his dad is a key element [to build season three].”
After all, “John B has to reconcile his idealised vision of his deceased father with the reality of his alive father,” Pate continued. There’s a lot of father-son material there for us to work with.
Writer Shannon Burke added: “It’s going to be important and maybe the core [of season three], really. It’s clear that the third season will be heavily influenced by this discovery.”
The actor who portrays John B, Chase Stokes, has talked up about how this discovery may affect his character in the future.
“It wasn’t like he [Big John] was carried away by a natural disaster or whatever the case may be,” he told TV Line when asked whether he hopes to continue to tell the narrative for a few more seasons. What does it look like when a father chooses to leave his child at home? Is this what it looks like when a youngster is confronted by a parent who has abandoned him and who has no concept of what has transpired since?
Outer Banks showrunners don’t have a “master plan” for the third season, even though they do have some ideas about the subjects they’d like to explore.
In terms of the show’s strategy, this seems to be business as usual. Season two’s reappearance of Big John wasn’t even a given when the showrunners were plotting the second season.
As Jonas Pate said to TV Line, “We knew we had that card. In the sixth or seventh episode of this year, as we were writing, “we started to realise maybe we could do it,” we didn’t know that we would play it for sure.
Pate told Entertainment Weekly, “It was always an idea lurking about and conceptually, it sets up certain things we want to explore in the third season.”
There were a few other endings shot for the first season since Pate and his team weren’t 100% sure, and there were a few on this season as well that Pate and his team didn’t use. It’s all about trial and error for us, since sometimes you don’t know until you put it all together.
The Pogues, along with new recruit Cleo, were left stranded on that deserted island in the second instalment. Regardless of how or if they manage to escape, fans will be watching with bated breath.
Producers said the group will not give up on their quest to find the treasure so simply.
Pate also disclosed that “the treasure search is going to expand, and the narrative behind the treasure hunt is going to deepen and get deeper” during the same EW conversation.
In addition, he said that the crew behind the scenes is “very excited” about the upcoming season’s “expansion.”
While the Pogues are stuck on their own island, Poguelandia, we may expect romance to blossom. Pate, the show’s executive producer, said that they were “immediately receptive” to the concept that fans who ship JJ and Kiara will be particularly delighted next season.
His response: “It sounds like a fascinating concept to investigate, but we kind of left it for season three.”

What about John B and Sarah?
“It’d be very great in season three” to watch them “start to genuinely get to know one other in a very true sense,” Madelyn Cline told ET.
It’s true that they’re married, but “they actually kind of don’t know a whole lot about each other,” she said.
For the third season, Chase Stokes has suggested that John B’s choice to get married may have been a little rushed.
John B seems to cling to many of the individuals in his life. “He’s a little more co-dependent than he likes to admit,” Stokes said to TV Line. His life has been saved by Sarah. When you find someone you love and want to spend the rest of your life with, you want to show them how much you appreciate them by giving them a ring. If you want to make it official, you have to go to court.’
This is perfectly understandable when you’re young, in love, and completely engrossed in the moment. It has been difficult for him to maintain a consistent level of performance, though. Yes, it’s important for him to have a source of stability in his life after the loss of his father. But, you know, for a kid who’s gone through so much tragedy, it comes from the right place, you know what I mean. Right concept, wrong time? Possibly.”
Carlina Grant (who portrays Cleo), a newcomer, told Elle that she hopes for another relationship and additional growth for her character in the future.
In an interview with the tabloid, she said, “I’m genuinely curious in watching this whole Cleo and Pope thing happen, if it does happen.”
In addition, I’d like to learn more about Cleo’s past. For my part, I’d like to see a lot more of her and her past. And I want her to have a lot more badass in her.
That’s something we’d be all for.
Where can I see the trailer for the third season of Outer Banks?
Unfortunately, while work is still in progress, there is currently no trailer. As soon as a release date has been set, we’ll be eagerly awaiting the trailer.
The episode picks up after the main character, John B, enlists the support of his pals to look for the same legendary treasure that led to his father’s disappearance. It takes place in the scenic Outer Banks of North Carolina and in Charleston, South Carolina, and chronicles the exploits of the “Pogues” as they embark on a real-life treasure hunt. We’re talking millions and millions of dollars in gold. When a treasure like that is on the run, it goes without saying that the Pogues aren’t alone in their pursuit; they must dodge several deadly confrontations along the way.
Season 3 will most likely pick off where season 2 left off, with Clara debating whether or not to help John B and the rest of the Pogues in their search for the shroud, thanks to a letter from John B’s half-dead father.
Big John is still alive and will likely play a crucial role in Season 3, however whether he finds out at the start or end of the season remains to be seen. Ward and Rafe will hopefully face the consequences of their actions in the coming months, between the murder of Big John and the other crimes they committed to ensure the Pogues didn’t make any progress in their hunt.
Guys, you’ll reap the rewards of your patience! When it comes to the Outer Banks, this is especially true. So, for the time being, you may binge-watch seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix at will.
Season 3 of Outer Banks is set to begin in late spring or early summer 2022. Don’t be surprised if the initial trailer focuses on one single character, as Pate teased in a Decider interview:
On Netflix, you can binge Outer Banks.
